At first glance, the European influence is easily identifiable. It is in the architecture, in the facades of Buenos Aires' grand buildings and avenues, in the graceful step and head-held-high haughtiness of the unusually handsome residents, referred to as Portenos. (You would hold your nose in the air and sashay down the street if you looked that good, too).
But scratch the surface and you'll immediately learn that Portenos are warm and friendly, and that wiggle in their walk comes from moving to a Latin beat. If you don't believe me, check out the swivel of the gorgeous tango dancers' hips. You don't see people move like that Old World.
Buenos Aires is a city that is bubbling with the energy of revitalization, it is a city rising anew from the rubble of the economic crisis. There is booming nightlife, great restaurants, and a fresh fashion scene full of talented Argentinean designers vying for a glance in this city where looks are all-important.
But don't mistake the Portenos emphasis on appearance for superficiality. There is plenty to sink your teeth into in Buenos Aires, and we're not just talking about steak. Buenos Aires is Argentina's cultural center and as such it offers visitors a wealth of interesting and thought-provoking destinations.
Buenos Aires is much more than the fashionable and picturesque city she seems to be. The vibrant atmosphere of the city comes from a culture that is quickly redefining, and reclaiming, its status in South America.
