Cozumel Vacations and Tourism

The stunning Caribbean island of Cozumel, situated off southeastern Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, is best known for its world-class reef diving opportunities. Since 1961, when Jacques Coustea's documentary put it on the international diving map, visitors have been flocking here to dive in one of the 100 sites located within five miles of the island. For the non-divers, scuba diving is a great option too and the charming, laid-back island is a great beach vacation destination in a safe environment. With friendly locals, fantastic scuba diving, white-sand beaches and plenty of restaurants and hotels, tourists flock to this upscale resort from mid-December to mid-April, when the weather is best and the rainfall is low. If you're looking for seclusion, try heading to the eastern side of the island, where you'll have more space on the beach and less development. If Mayan ruins interest you, explore the inland site of San Gervasio, several miles north of Carretera Transveral. Near the town of El Cedral you'll find some smaller Mayan ruins and at the southern tip of Cozumel lies Templo El Caracol, an ancient structure thought to have served as a lighthouse for the Mayans.
