While some consider Marrakech the heart and soul of Morocco, many would argue that Fes is the only contender for this title. Both cities have vibrant medinas, abuzz with the business of daily life, pulsating with the lives of the Moroccans who reside there. Both cities are a brilliant display of Morocco's unique culture of both Muslim and North African influences. But Fes has been at for a very long time.
So long, in fact, that Fes's medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Fes's medina was established in the ninth century and includes the world's oldest university. Fes saw a majority of its growth during medieval times and today you can wander its maze of winding streets, admiring the architecture and heritage of the past while enjoying the sounds, sights, and smells of present-day Moroccan life.
Fes is not only a tourism hit, it's a favorite amongst shoppers scoping out some one-of-a-kind goods. The medina is home to Fes's famous tanneries and while the smell they put out is less than pleasant, their handcrafted leather-goods are extraordinary.
