Not only is Marrakech located in the heart of Morocco it is, for some, the heart of Morocco.
Morocco is a fascinating blend of both North Africa and the Arab world, and this fusion is on constant, energetic display within the faded red walls of Marrakech's medina. By day, the medina is abuzz with the activity of daily life: vendors hawk their wares, women haggle in the market, children run through the narrow, maze-like streets and alleys. By night, the medina is a hive of social activity: Moroccans and tourists alike eat dinner at the open-air tables by the dozens of food stalls and crowds encircle the many entertainers in the plaza. You'll hear strains of traditional Moroccan music, the pulse of drums, the animated voices of storytellers, and the predictions of fortune tellers.
Marrakech also offers some great shopping opportunities, if you're in the market for unique handcrafted goods. But be prepared for a lengthy, and sometimes stressful, purchasing process. In all cases, it includes extensive haggling, in more pleasant cases, the sale unfolds over a cup of hot tea.
When you're ready to escape the medina, Marrakech offers other sights of interest for tourism. Wander around the magnificent Bahia Palace or sit for a spell in a steam-filled hamman.
The only drawback of Marrakech vacations? Marrakech is every bit as short on nightlife as it is long on culture.
