Be prepared to be overwhelmed by the heaving breath of humanity in Mumbai. Mumbai might be shockingly crowded, it might be irritatingly noisy, it might be surprisingly backwards, it might be refreshingly modern, it might be heartbreakingly poor, and it might be disgustingly rich, but it's anything but boring.
Many travelers don't give tourism in Mumbai a chance. Rather than considering Mumbai vacations, many opt to bypass it altogether or only stay long enough to make arrangements to journey elsewhere. Some say that Mumbai isn't the "real" India. Others are simply horrified by what they see at first glance and run screaming to the countryside. We pity both of these groups of travelers.
Why? Because Mumbai is the real India. It is the best of India. And the worst. A vibrant microcosm of all the extremes the subcontinent has to offer, from deeply moving spirituality to stratospherically expensive cocktail lounges, the colorful tangle of Mumbai shouldn't be missed.
