Saint Augustine is for lovers. Or families, or singles, or anyone looking to unwind in a quaint beachside town that has been influenced by both Europe and the Deep South.
The Spaniards founded a settlement here in 1565. Yup, over 50 years before Jamestown was founded by the British. In fact, Saint Augustine is the oldest continuously occupied town in the United States and today you'll find both the charm and kitsch that go along with that. Stroll the cobblestone streets of the Spanish Quarter and discover both delightful cafes serving up tasty sangria, as well as the cheesiest of tourist tchotchkes. But all things considered, and as Saint Augustine's busy tourism industry attests, the good strongly outweighs the bad. And not only are Saint Augustine's historic sites a big hit, so are her beaches. The combination of sun, surf, and a side of Spanish colonial history makes this is a great place to pass some time.
For lovers, or singles, Saint Augustine offers a better nightlife than one would expect. Though you certainly won't be out until the break of dawn, you can find some more-than-adequate watering holes, some of which include historic reenactments complete with bawdy songs from the British navy. Think you're too cool to sing about knickers and such? A couple of Ye Olde Ales and you'll find yourself howling along with the crowd.
