Terre Haute is a city in the midwestern United States, with a population of nearly 60,000. It is the county seat of Vigo County, located in west-central Indiana state, about 4 hours (300 km) south of Chicago, Illinois and 1 hour southwest of Indianapolis, Indiana. The name "Terre Haute" is French for "high land" and refers to the area's history from the French colonization of the Americas as well as its geography next to the Wabash River.
