Miami Beach is a city in Florida. This small barrier island near Miami was originally cleared of mangroves in the late 1800's to make way for a coconut farm, and was later incorporated as a city by real estate developers in 1915. In 1979 Miami Beach's Art Deco Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. South Beach is the section of Miami Beach, Florida that encompasses the southernmost 23 blocks of an island separating the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay. Miami Beach has been one of America's pre-eminent beach resorts for almost a century. Since undergoing a revival in the 1980s, it has become synonymous with the pleasure-seeking lifestyles of the jet set. During the winter season of January to March, celebrities, fashion models and wealthy Europeans make the city a second home, and rates at some of the best hotels can be astronomical.
