Minneapolis was born as a center of grain commerce due to its location on the banks of the Mississippi. The river cuts through the downtown, formerly dividing the small town of Minneapolis from the flour milling powerhouse of St. Anthony. What was St. Anthony is now northeast Minneapolis; Minnesota's original "big city" lives on in Minneapolis place and landmark names such as St. Anthony Falls and St. Anthony Main, as well as the modern, tiny, City of St. Anthony nestled between cemeteries and rail yards at Minneapolis' northeast corner.
