A suicide bomber has left ten dead following an attack on tribal elders in Eastern Afghanistan, the interior ministry has said.

The bomber took the lives of ten people, including Pro-Government tribal elder Haji Malik Zarin. The blast took place in Kunar province, which borders Pakistan.

Among the dead were Mr Zarin’s Son and his nephew, although a Taliban spokesman have denied carrying out the attack, pointing to the idea that Zarin has “his own enemies”.

Seven were also left injured in the attack which saw a suicide bomber enter the premises, hug Malik Zarin and unveiled the explosives strapped to his chest.

Mr Zarin is well known as a former military commander during the civil war in the 1990’s. He had previously avoided a past assassination attempt.

The incident took place at 11.15am (local time). No group have claimed the responsibility of the blast.

The province has been subject of heavy fighting during the recent weeks with six U.S soldiers being killed on the 29th March 2011. A NATO service member was also killed in a roadside bomb.

Another roadside bomb has taken the life of one person and wounded two in the south of Kabul, the Afghan Ministry of Interior have said.
