It's a well known fact that the Brits are lovers of French food; from pain au chocolat to an array of delicious cheeses. But did you ever think you'd spot a classic French delicacy in a traditional chip shop? Well, that's exactly what is happening at a chippy in the coastal town of Sunderland in North East England with the newest addition to their menu - deep fried frog's legs.
The battered French speciality has recently been introduced at Katie Mac's Fish 'n' Chips and is proving that the Brits aren't all about Haddock and Pukka Pies!
The owner of the chippy has said that the reason behind choosing frog's legs as their latest offering is that the price of cod is simply too high. Whilst it was obviously a bold move, apparently the frog's legs have been a hit with locals and tourists alike. Katie Mac's is now selling roughly fifteen portions of the deep friend French dish a week, with many of the chippy's regulars counting themselves as 'converts'. After all, the thought of frog's legs isn't exactly mouth watering for the average Brit! But they're going down an absolute treat.
So how do they taste? Well, the word on the Sunderland street seems to be that the battered frog's legs taste like a 'sharper' version of chicken. So the delicacy isn't going to be blowing people's taste buds away, but it should at least give frog's legs a slightly better reputation than they currently enjoy! There have even been some French tourists who have stopped by Katie Mac's to try out the British version of one of their staples. And the verdict? Not bad at all!
Let's just hope that we won't be seeing deep fried snails any time soon... the British palette might not be ready for that just yet!
